Polygon PoS vs zkEVM Confirmation Time

On Polygon PoS, each block is produced roughly every 2 seconds. Transactions achieve initial confirmation with one block, but full network finality is typically considered reached after 128 blocks (~4–5 minutes). Validators periodically checkpoint the PoS chain to Ethereum, adding a layer of long-term security.

Polygon zkEVM achieves internal finality within 2 to 3 seconds for transactions executed within the rollup. However, the ultimate cryptographic finality on Ethereum Layer 1 takes longer, as the proof must be generated and submitted. For most DeFi and payment applications operating within the zkEVM, the 2–3 second finality is what users experience.

Polygon PoS: ~2 sec per block, 128 confirmations for exchange finality (~4–5 min), checkpointed to Ethereum every 10–30 minutes. Polygon zkEVM: internal finality in 2–3 seconds, L1 Ethereum proof settlement takes longer. For everyday payments, zkEVM is faster to settle. For deep security with exchange deposits, the PoS chain with 128 confirmations is the established standard.

Choose Polygon PoS if you are interacting with established DeFi protocols, making large exchange deposits, or need broad ecosystem compatibility. Choose Polygon zkEVM if you are building new applications that benefit from Ethereum-equivalent security with faster user-facing confirmation times and are willing to handle L1 proof settlement overhead.
